Urbana Lighthouse is blessed to partner with Upward Sports and become a part of Upward
Basketball. This league is for grades 1-6 both boys and girls and is a Christ centered basketball league
that focuses totally on the child. Each child gets equal playing time and development. Each child gets a
chance to start and teams are systematically chosen to keep them all equal. This program is so child
specific that even the substitutions are broken down to a science!
In this league the focus is on the success of each child! Competition is from within to succeed as an
individual in helping your team be successful. We encourage the Circle of Affirmation and discourage
the Circle of Criticism. Scores and team records are irrelevant as we work to improve the overall
abilities and sportsmanship of each player in the league. Our belief is we can not only help each player
become better basketball players, but learn to become better well rounded sports as well. Our focus is
purely to be as positive an environment as can be for our players while still making them fundamentally
sound in the game.
Games consist of three six minute periods per half. The clock runs constantly during this time and only
stops at the end of each period at which time substitutions are made. Halftime is eight minutes and
includes a water break and a quick devotional when someone will share a time when God did
something unique in their life. Each child will have opportunity to start throughout the season and no
child sits consecutive periods. Please join us in promoting the best of sportsmanship and patience as
we grow our children in this great game!
Games are played at the Urbana Middle School. Our opening day is on Saturday January 22 and all
games after that will be on Saturdays as noted on the schedule. Our awards celebration will then be on
Sunday March 13 to close our magnificent season!
Practices..are held for one hour, one day each week. Your practice day will remain the same as will
your hour of practice and the facility you practice at. Occasionally it may become necessary to change a
location place or cancel due to weather but your coaches and this website as well as the local TV
stations will carry that information for you. Our practice location primarily is Little Hearts and Little
Hands Daycare where our evaluations were held. We do have a Friday group at another facility at this
time however.
Your Child will love coming out through a tunnel of fog when their name is announced in their NBA style
jerseys each game. They will also love the atmosphere that is all about them while they still learn the
game fundamentals as well. Please join us for another great season. Cost is minimal and limited
scholarships are available. Keep checking back for more information as the program progresses.
The End of the Season....is celebrated with a huge celebration ceremony in which all participants are
recognized for their great success and given tokens of appreciation from Upward Sports for their
participation. You won't want to miss this great event!
